Why is a long-time meditation practitioner still admitting to daily distraction problems?

Even 35 years of practice and long silent retreats haven't inoculated Cort. Sitting at his desk, he still gets pulled from email to online shopping, from a report back to email, from one thing to another. "It just feels like there are so many things in our life pulling us in a million different directions."

The admission matters because it reframes the problem. This is not a moral failing. It's not about discipline. Something structural about modern life is stronger than three and a half decades of contemplative training.

Wired for novelty & danger

Distraction isn't a bug — it's a feature. The same wiring that makes us vulnerable to notifications kept our ancestors alive.

Why did evolution build us to be distractible?

Because rare events often matter most. Danger signals are, by definition, uncommon — but noticing them is decisive. The brain evolved to detect surprise, detect discrepancies, detect rare events because those tend to carry survival weight.

The unprecedented, uncontrolled exposure most of us now have to information — through phones, social media, notifications — is a massive uncontrolled trial with human attention as the variable. Nobody signed a consent form. Nobody designed it to be good for us. It happened to us, and we're all inside it.

Data suggest people are indeed measurably more distracted today than 50 years ago. Not just a feeling — a shift.

Habituation & the extremity spiral

The evolutionary machinery has a critical property: it stops responding to what it's already seen. That property is what drives content platforms toward escalation.

What is habituation, and why is it central to how attention works?

If the identical surprising event is repeated, your brain stops responding to it. "By the 10th time, you're no longer going to pay attention to it." This is habituation — the brain's basic economy of not wasting resources on the already-familiar.

It's why the same notification sound gets ignored after a while, and why cat videos on their own don't hold you.

How does habituation force content platforms toward more extreme content?

The masters of technology have figured out how to capture attention by providing more and more extreme examples of things that are of interest to us. If regular content stops working, escalate. If escalated content stops working, escalate again.

The escalation has consequences beyond just attention: it also reinforces and reifies extreme beliefs — a key driver of divisiveness. The mechanism was built for danger detection. It's now being pointed at outrage.

What does Cort mean by "we are the product"?

On most social platforms, the thing being sold isn't a service to you. It's your attention, sold to advertisers. Everything about the design is optimized for that transaction. "They're harvesting our attention."

Which means the app isn't broken when it distracts you. It's working exactly as designed.

Why does understanding the game actually make you more free, not less?

Once you can see the mechanism, you can watch it operate on yourself in real time. "If I watch that video a little longer and swipe past this other one, I know in a moment or two — two or three videos later — I'm going to see something..."

You can name the loop as it's running. Naming it doesn't make you immune, but it puts your prefrontal cortex back on the field. You go from being played to watching the play — which is the first thing that has to happen before you can do anything else.

The locus coeruleus

Richie zooms into the specific brain machinery that gets hijacked. This is the circuit tech is exploiting, whether it knows it or not.

What is the locus coeruleus, and what does it do?

A small structure in the brainstem, rich in norepinephrine, with projections that are extraordinarily widespread across the cortex. When something captures your attention involuntarily — not because you chose to attend to it, but because it grabbed you — there's a transient burst of activity in the locus coeruleus.

That burst produces a broad increase in cortical arousal — not just in the region for that sensory modality, but across the whole brain. Even a simple sound produces a whole-brain jolt. That whole-brain jolt is the neural signature of attention capture.

How does this system stop responding to repeated stimuli?

Habituation, again. The same locus coeruleus burst that fires for the novel event stops firing when the event stops being novel. The system is exquisitely tuned to change — new stimuli, unexpected stimuli, discrepant stimuli. Steady state gets ignored.

Which is exactly why platforms design for unpredictability rather than consistency.

The mismatch negativity

A classic neuroscience paradigm shows how automatic this attention capture is — and how hard it is to override, even for experienced meditators.

What is the "mismatch negativity" experimental paradigm?

A series of identical tones is played — "beep, beep, beep, beep, beep..." — and then interrupted by a tone of a different pitch — "boop." The brain automatically detects the discrepancy and produces a well-characterized electrical signal in response. It happens whether the listener is paying attention or not. It's the neural equivalent of "wait — that one was different."

The same principle is what makes the odd notification, the surprise headline, and the unexpected image so effective at grabbing you.

Can decades of meditation training override the mismatch negativity?

Mostly no. "It's very difficult, even in long-term meditators. This is so basic, it's very hard to override." There's some evidence of alterations at the very extreme end of practice, but for moderate long-term meditators, the response is essentially intact.

The point is important: you're not going to meditate your way out of the wiring. The wiring doesn't need to be defeated. It needs to be worked with.

When does the pattern become more overrideable?

When the discrepancy is semantic rather than sensory. If instead of tones you present a list of words in a category — "zebra, tiger, monkey, elephant, flower, rabbit" — the odd one out ("flower" among animals) can be caught or missed depending on where attention is directed.

Semantic-level discrepancies leave more room for top-down control. Sensory-level discrepancies don't.

Variable interval reinforcement

The single most addictive schedule of reward that psychology has ever documented — and the exact schedule your feed runs on.

What is "variable interval reinforcement," and why is it so addictive?

A schedule where rewards arrive at unpredictable intervals. If you know a reward comes every third try, you can pace yourself. If you have no idea when — could be the next swipe, could be ten swipes from now — you keep going. The uncertainty itself is what keeps you engaged.

"That's extremely addicting in terms of its attentional capture."

How is this schedule engineered into a social media feed?

If you watch a cat video, the algorithm doesn't hand you ten cat videos in a row — that would trigger habituation and you'd stop. Instead, it randomizes the intervals. Maybe five swipes to the next cat video, then ten swipes, then two swipes. You never know when the reward is coming, so you keep swiping.

The Skinner box logic is old. The delivery mechanism is new.

Emotion vs. the prefrontal cortex

The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that says "here's where I want to go, and I'm going there." Emotion disrupts it. That disruption is another vector for hijack.

What is the prefrontal cortex's role in staying focused?

It's the seat of the central executive network — the network guiding intentional, self-directed behavior. It's the opposite of the hijacked mode. It's the part of the brain saying, "Here's where I want to go, and I'm going there."

How does emotion disrupt the prefrontal cortex?

The prefrontal cortex and the subcortical emotional regions are in continuous bidirectional dialogue. Emotional signals rise up from subcortical regions to the prefrontal cortex; and the prefrontal cortex, when functioning, sends top-down signals back to regulate those emotional regions.

Strong emotion disrupts that regulatory loop. When the emotional signal is loud enough, the prefrontal cortex can't do its executive job. This is why fear, outrage, and desire — the emotions social feeds are engineered to trigger — are so effective at pulling attention. They don't just grab you. They disable your defense.

Richie offers a speculative but sobering hypothesis about what modern conditions may be doing to prefrontal function at scale.

What was the prefrontal cortex evolutionarily for?

Putting a plan into operation and then executing it over a long period. In an ancestral environment with far fewer episodic external distractors, the prefrontal cortex could steadily guide behavior toward a chosen goal without being constantly derailed.

What's Richie's speculation about the modern baseline of prefrontal function?

"Now we have basically ceded control to the forces around us — and it has led to a kind of impairment, a collective impairment in prefrontal function that we're all suffering from."

It's a speculative claim, but the logic is straightforward. Skills that aren't used atrophy. Attention that's constantly directed by the environment is attention that's not being directed by you. Over time, at scale, the muscle weakens.

The good news: it's a muscle. It responds to training.

Intention as reps

The pivot from diagnosis to practice. The training doesn't require anything exotic — just a rep, repeated a thousand times a day.

What is the fundamental practice for rebuilding prefrontal function?

Reps. "Just as we do physical exercise and benefit from reps, we can benefit from reps with our mental capacities."

The specific rep: every time you feel an urge to pull out your phone, don't automatically pull it out. Just be aware of the urge. Then decide — is this actually a moment when I need the phone, or is this just an urge to be acknowledged and let go? "There actually is a choice we can make at that point. But we need to be aware to begin with."

That is the rep. You can do a thousand of those a day, easily.

What does the self-regulation research say — and what's the hope for the "bad marshmallow" kid?

A large longitudinal literature: kids who learned early to delay gratification — resist the marshmallow — show measurably better life outcomes as adults. Kids who couldn't, without intervention, tend to do worse.

Cort's admission: "I would have been a kid for sure — that marshmallow would have been down the hatch." And yet decades of deliberate practice have built exactly the capacity he lacked at age four. The trait is trainable at any age. The starting place does not fix the ending place.

What single word does Cort say captures the heart of the practice?

Intention. Before your mind gets pulled, you make a choice. "I just got an alert. I'm going to choose to look at it right now — or I noticed the pull, but I'm going to ask myself: do I want to check this message right now?"

Not eliminating the pull. Not pretending it isn't there. Just inserting a moment of choice between the pull and the action. That moment is the whole game.

Digital hygiene

The final move: don't just train yourself in the moment. Redesign the environment so fewer moments require training.

What does preemptive intentionality look like?

Architecting your environment so fewer distractors show up in the first place. Concrete moves from Cort:

Delete apps you don't come away from feeling good about. Turn off notifications — nearly all of them, on nearly every app. Keep the phone muted by default; check messages when you decide, not when the phone decides.

"I'm almost architecting my life so I'm just not exposed to those things." The point isn't self-flagellation. It's recognizing that fighting the pull a thousand times a day is exhausting, and lowering the number of pulls is a valid strategy.

What does Richie call this whole domain?

Digital hygiene. He's an advocate for building a full digital hygiene curriculum — including contemplative practices for attention regulation — and starting it with kids.

The framing matters. It's not moralistic. It's not anti-tech. It's hygiene. The same way we brush our teeth without any drama about the germs, we could learn to relate to our devices with the same matter-of-fact care.

The takeaway

Distraction is engineered. So is the antidote.

You're not weak. The wiring being hijacked — novelty detection, the locus coeruleus, variable interval reinforcement, emotion's disruption of the prefrontal cortex — was built for a slower world and is being exploited for a faster one. Even 35 years of practice doesn't override it.

What overrides it is a rep. A moment of awareness between the pull and the action. A single question: do I actually want to do this right now? Repeated a thousand times a day, that moment rebuilds the muscle that modern life has been quietly wasting.
